Trying to come up with a worthwhile resolution this year? Have you considered doing your part to go green? Here at Bay State ReBath we are committing ourselves to something very near and dear to our hearts – saving water in the bathroom. Water is one of our most precious resources and there are many ways to reduce consumption without sacrificing bathroom comfort.
The shower is the main culprit when it comes to wasting water. Many of us use the shower for much more than general hygiene. The shower serves as a sanctuary, a place to wake up, and a place to relax. In fact a recent eNation survey showed 83.7% of people take showers for the primary purpose of relaxing and meditating. 34% of the survey respondents said the “shower is my time for just focusing on me.” According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, these users account for 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year.
While many of us are not willing to give up our shower rituals, there are some key steps we can take to save water while maintaining our overall shower experience.
New Shower Heads:
If you haven’t changed your showerhead in over 2 years you could be wasting a significant amount of water. New showerheads are certified to run more efficiently. Look for the WaterSense logo. These showerheads are part of a new 2010 EPA initiative to conserve water and must run at a rate of 2 gallons per min(gpm) or less. Also look for Delta Faucet Companies’ new H2Okinetic Technology. These showerheads deliver a shower at a rate of 1.5gpm that feels like 2.5gpm resulting in a 40% increase in water conservation. This technology reforms the droplets and spray structure in order to retain heat and increase spray coverage. In short, it makes better use of your water.
Multitask:
While it won’t necessarily save water, it will make better use of your time while you’re in the shower. Brushing your teeth, or shaving in front of a hanging mirror can be a much more efficient use of your time in the shower. Hanging cloths to un-wrinkle in the steam will save you time ironing later. Standing idle in the stream can become second nature, but with a little re-learning we can transform our mornings.
Be Resourceful:
We all do it. Running the shower for 5 minutes just to get the water to warm up. Why not make use of all that wasted water? Place a bucket under the stream and use it to water your plants, wash the car, the counters, even the dog. We really don’t care what you do, as long as you’re reducing your footprint while you do it. Be creative and have fun with it. Make a news years resolution you can be proud of. We’ll be right there with you.
